A temperature forecast is the end of a chain that runs through moisture, cloud and wind, and these panels show the chain directly. Each tool’s hourly temperature, dewpoint, sky cover and wind is drawn under the station’s own METAR readings, so whether the day is following the forecast’s physical script can be read before the temperature settles it. Heating running ahead under clearer skies than forecast argues the high is underestimated; persistent low cloud and an onshore breeze argue it will not be reached.
Each day of the past week, then the last three complete days of it hour by hour. The shaded columns above are the same three days the panel below opens out, and both panels share one temperature scale, so a height means the same thing in each.
Every tool is read at one moment, six in the evening, this station’s own time, the day before, so none of them has seen any of the day and every one has the same lead. The hours under each name are how far that tool’s standing run was from midnight at that moment.
