Natural gas, coal and oil prediction markets

These contracts settle on figures the Energy Information Administration publishes each month. ForecastEx lists them on total consumption of coal and of natural gas, in the United States and in California, and on the share of United States electricity generated from coal, from natural gas and from petroleum. Each pays one dollar if the published figure comes in above the stated threshold.

Contracts on wind, solar, nuclear and hydroelectric generation, on electricity prices and on fusion milestones are on the electricity and renewables page.

Records behind each contract

Every series here is the Energy Information Administration’s own, and a contract settles on the value in the agency’s release for the month it names. The agency publishes a month well after that month ends and revises earlier months as more complete data arrives, so a contract on a recent month is priced against a figure that has not been published yet. Each panel draws the series with the listed strikes at the month the contract settles, and dragging across the history fits a straight line to the window dragged, which describes that window and carries no forecast of the series.

Consumption is measured in the units the agency reports for each fuel, and a generation share is the percentage of total United States electricity that fuel supplied, which moves with demand as well as with what is burned. There are no sellers on this exchange. A participant buys Yes or buys No, and the two bids sum to one dollar.
